E-mail Print PDF

Goal

The main goal of this project is to provide and sustain agro-based income through enhanced stakeholder partnerships in agribusiness development.

 Objective(s):

Specific objectives include;

  • To build and improve local capacities with regard to best practices and technologies in greenhouse farming
  • To diversify and enrich domestic food baskets and incomes through agricultural production and marketing
  • To establish and strengthen institutions that will support and sustain research and resources for agribusiness development

Beneficiaries:

The direct beneficiaries of this project are:

30 farmers with greater women representation all drawn from Arabsiyo area of Somaliland. The identified farmers will come from different villages in Woqooyi Galbeed region where Arabsiyo Farmers Training Centre (AFTC) is situated and would be heads of families without reliable sources of routine income. They will receive life skills training in innovative agribusiness management which will entail greenhouse farming, processing and marketing of both fresh and processed farm products.

The AFTC as a host of this project will be empowered and better placed to train farmers and other institutions in greenhouse technology. ADRA is of the view that scaling up project gains is a very critical aspect that could substantially be realized through an institution of the status of AFTC. Many farmers are ignorant of new technologies and if aware they are mostly scared by technophobia. This is a challenge that a training centre would relish to embrace and take lead in replicating.

It is anticipated that upon project completion, the full realization of this intervention would reach out to about 5,377 indirect beneficiaries.

The Arabsiyo Greenhouse Project is aiming to pilot three key components for a sustained agricultural development in Somaliland: training functional farmer groups, improving agricultural productivity through greenhouses and entrepreneurship in farm produce. The Project is targeting Hargeisa in Woqooyi Galbeed region of Somaliland through Arabsiyo Agricultural Farmers Training Centre (AFTC). Through the Project, ADRA intends to promote intensive small-holder agriculture by making use of the available natural resources like wind energy, water, land and labour in the project area.

The project has organized farmers into groups that have been strengthened by committees governed by agreements. The intervention is targeting heads of families without reliable sources of routine income. Women comprise 70% of the direct beneficiaries. ADRA’s presence in the region for many years has enabled her to establish working partnerships with the local authorities, grass root communities and other local and international NGOs on the ground. The farmers are being trained and provided with farm inputs and implements to start greenhouse farming at the centre.

Enterprise development component of the project is aimed at stimulating market for the farm produce to sustain the project as an income generating activity (IGA).
