In late 2009, ADRA Germany in partnership with ADRA Somalia and Relief International UK was awarded a grant by the European Union (EU) for implementation of a new Education Project called Expanded Participation in Basic Education (EPIBE) to be implemented in Somaliland (Sool & Sanaag), Puntland (Karkar, Bari, Nugal, Sool, Sanaag and Mudug) and Central South Somalia (Hiran, Bay & Bakool regions).
ADRA and Relief International are jointly implementing the Project in collaboration with the Ministries of Education in Puntland, Somaliland and South Central Somalia as well as partner communities in 71 primary schools and 24 adult learning centres in the targeted Regions.
The 3 year Project aims to increase access to primary education for children and basic education for adults with gender parity, improve classroom interactions in targeted primary schools and adult learning centres in line with principles of pedagogy and adragogy and improve capacity of Ministries of Education to manage and sustain primary and basic education.
Overall Objective: To develop a sustainable, cohesive education system providing relevant formal and non-formal education to all children and adults in Somalia.
Specific Objective: Increased participation in non-formal and formal quality basic education with particular focus on girls and women achieved.
Main Activities of the Project
1. Baseline studies to identify sites and set benchmarks and milestones
2. Renovate/construct inspirational learning spaces
3. Support improvement of quality of teaching
4. Promote youth/adult literacy, numeracy and life skills
5. Establish sports facilities for children and youth
6. Promote inter school competitions
7. Organize exchange visits for teachers and Community Education Committees (CECs)
8. Capacity development of Ministry of Education and education institutions
9. Provide basic office equipment to Ministry of Education (MoE)
10. Provide school supplies to benefit children, youths and adults
11. Construction and rehabilitation of water and sanitation facilities
12. Supply teaching/reading materials on cross-cutting issues
13. Promote extra-curricular activities and provide required materials
14. Train Ministry of Education (moE) on Monitoring and Evaluation
15. Identify needs and implement capacity development of CECs
16. Assist MoE/CECs to identify and train adult education teachers
17. Reproduce and distribute functional adult literacy classes
18. Support and strengthen teacher mentoring on cross-cutting issues
19. Support establishment of Parents-Teachers Associations (PTAs)
20. Creating mechanisms for sustaining upgrades
